Jim Moran’s disgusting comments on the military

UPDATE: Patrick Murray responds. See the video at the bottom of this post and our press release issued yesterday.

Take a look at this video of Jim Moran from the October 6 Arlington County Democratic Committee meeting:

Here’s what he said:

What [Republicans] do is that they find candidates – usually stealth candidates – that haven’t been in office, haven’t served or performed any kind of public service. My opponent is typical.

Really, Jim? Col. J. Patrick Murray, U.S. Army (Ret.) served his country honorably for 24 years in the military. That includes deployment to Baghdad in 2007 and a tour at the United Nations. How dare you say that is not public service.

The local media hasn’t picked up on this; it was a letter to the editor of the Washington Times and a few Northern Virginia blogs that brought it to our attention.

Let’s put politics aside. This is utterly disgraceful. Jim Moran needs to apologize to the millions of Americans who have served and are serving their country in the best possible way they can, and to the families of military men and women who have sacrificed so much for our freedom.

PRESS RELEASE

Jim Moran says serving in the military is NOT public service
Citizens Demand Apology for All Who Serve, Past & Present

ARLINGTON, VA — The website RetireJimMoran.com is calling on Rep. Jim Moran of the 8th District of Virginia to apologize for comments Moran made about his Republican opponent in the November 2nd general election, Patrick Murray.

At the October 6 meeting of the Arlington County Democratic Committee (video here), Moran said, “What [Republicans] do is that they find candidates – usually stealth candidates – that haven’t been in office, haven’t served or performed any kind of public service. My opponent is typical.” Patrick Murray is a retired U.S. Army Colonel who served 24 years in the military, including deployment to Baghdad, Iraq as part of the troop surge in 2007.

“Let’s put politics aside. Moran’s comments are utterly disgraceful and insulting to not just Patrick Murray, but to all the millions of men and women who have served in our military, past and present,” said Tommy Valentine, webmaster of RetireJimMoran.com. “Serving honorably in the military, as Col. Murray did for 24 years, is the best kind of public service anyone can do for our great nation.”

“Moran needs to apologize to Patrick Murray and to the millions of brave men and women who fought and died to give him the freedom to say such things. His comments are gravely offensive to every patriotic American.”

Also, here is my personal experience with Jim Moran:
Tonight was Candidates Night with my Hayfield Homeowners’ Association: Murray, Fisher (IG) and Moran were all there together, but each had his own time of 25 mins; we expected a speech and Q&A from each candidate, and Murray and Fisher both complied with that. Each left after his time, for other engagements. Moran, however, used the entire 25 mins for a “speech” which reminisced on what a quaint area District 8 was back when, and since his representation, has blossomed so. He also droned on about redistributing the wealth and how our current deficit is all the Republicans doing since under Bush, they did not cut spending when they cut taxes. When he was politely reminded about his time limit, he DASHED out of the room. He was gone. Swoosh. Total spin session/with no questions what so ever! An incumbent Democrat’s dream in 2010! LESSON: Anyone else planning a “Meet the Candidates” night, insist that Jim Moran go first (since he will avoid any hint of a “debate.”) What a fine representative (not!) we have in Jim Moran! Oh, and to further instruct from this despicable occasion, his loyal followers in the room are claiming that he was treated rudely and that is why he left so abruptly! I was within earshot of the time reminders, and both were extremely courteous. So, alas, it is true, liberals don’t care about the facts.

  3. Not surprising. You cannot debate the issues with liberals without them totally dismissing your existence, and not addressing or rebutting your arguments based upon facts. COME ON NOVEMBER 2nd! AMF Jimmy-boy.

  7. Mr. Moran:

May I respectfully suggest that you research the following term as it may apply to your political career:

    “Incoming.”

    Go get ‘im, Colonel Murray!

  11. Mr. Moran doesn’t need to apologize because an apology from a traitor like him wouldn’t matter one iota. He does need to go, however. And by that I don’t just mean be defeated in an election, because that would be too easy on him. He needs to go as a human being, to jail, for treason.
Victory in November! Treason trials in December!

  12. Was 65 Year Old Rep. “Little Jimmy” Moran (D-VA 8) a Vietnam Era Draft Dodger? Now that the “Little Jimmy” Youtube video rant that “military service is not public service” has gone viral on the Internet, I’m surprised no one is asking how “Little Jimmy” managed to Dodge the Draft despite being of optimum draft age during Vietnam (DOB: 16 May 45). As a retired Army Colonel VN Vet draftee, I’m appalled by “Little Jimmy’s” comment on the service record of his opponent, retired Army COL Patrick Murray, On 6 Oct, Jimmy stated, “What [Republicans] do is that they find candidates – usually stealth candidates – that haven’t been in office, haven’t served or performed any kind of public service. My opponent is typical.” COL Murray served his country for 24 years in the Army with 4 combat deployments including Iraq as part of the troop surge.

Like his mentor, good old Joe “5-Deferment” Biden (and Dick Cheney to be fair), it appears “Little Jimmy” did everything short of maiming himself (he didn’t have the guts) to dodge the VN Draft. By comparison, COWARDs like him make “George W” look like a war hero! (For the record, Bush flying antique Air Guard Convair F-102s was probably in more danger than I was during an extended CIB-earning tour in Vietnam!). Active military service was a certainty for any male born between 1940-49 unless morally, mentally or medically unfit, or they took some overt action to “dodge” the draft. Also, when “Little Jimmy” evaded, someone else, probably less educated or advantaged and definitely less eligible, served in his place.

My point, if “Little Jimmy” wasn’t fit to serve then, what makes him fit to serve now? Better still, what makes him more fit to serve than combat vet COL (Ret) Pat Murray?

  14. Moran’s comments reflect that of his “typical” elitist Demorat mentality. Truly a disgrace to this nation and is without question a liability that must be shelved.
The beauty of his initial foot in mouth comments are that in attempting to soften the unbridled ignorance that he displayed he pretty much shoved his entire leg in his mouth with his follow up commentary. What a Tool !!!!
WVA – You need to bag this crusty piece of sewage !

  15. So wait, being in congress, that is selfless public service, but serving in the military is just selfishly drawing a government paycheck.

So why hasn’t Moron come out against The National Cemetery that is in his own district. By The Moron’s Logic, it is filled with self serving former government employees.

Boy those former government employees are lucky that the selfless and most righteous servant-savant Lords of Capitol Hill have seen fit to give them a place to rest, of course paid by the taxpayers who Moron has toiled to serve.

What a noble noble Lord, the 8th district doth have. Surely ye are unworthy of such greatness in your very midst.
